A score pad though, can run you $20-$30 depending on the brand, what little features it may have to offer and so forth. I figured out a free way of scoring paper.

What you'll need:
Your card stock of choice
A butter knife
A pencil (optional)
A ruler

Take your card stock and figure out where you want your fold. If you want, you can use a pencil to mark your fold line, but it isn't always necessary. Then, take your ruler and place it where you intend to fold your paper. Take your butter knife and move the edge (NOT the serrated edge) along the side of your ruler like you would a pencil. You may need to do this a couple of times for heavier card stock. This will create an indent in your paper. And now, fold. You'll have a perfect fold without those little wrinkles.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-31201053068121759522012-04-23T09:32:00.003-07:002012-04-23T09:32:52.935-07:00New Monday: Some awesome Mother's Day cards for yaI have some awesome Mother's Day cards to show you. But while making Mother's Day cards I realized I didn't have anything to put them in to keep the dust off until they sold. So I went hunting for a photo organizer, but those overly priced shoes boxes they call photo organizer's just wouldn't do. I wanted something longer that I could organize all of my greeting cards according to type. So after hitting up three different stores I finally found the perfect box.

I found this at Office Max and it's perfect. It's a DVD movie organizer that snaps together and is pretty sturdy once it's all together.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-38570537230432502532012-04-10T09:47:00.000-07:002012-04-10T09:47:51.472-07:00Paper Tuesday: Metallic Card Stock

Just one of the many styles of envelopes Paper and More supplies

As someone who makes and sells stationery, I buy paper in bulk. It's cheaper, which means I won't have to charge my customers as much than if I just bought a pack from Michael's or Hobby Lobby. So my go-to place for when I'm in need of card stock is Paper and More.

So I had this awesome design concept (which, as usual, looked better on paper than in real life) and I needed a dark gray card stock. So I went to my favorite online paper store and the only card stock I could find that was the perfect shade of gray was metallic. Hmmm... I thought. I purchased the sample pack which included the metallic steel gray card stock along with other sample colors (the metallic champagne is gorg-e-ous) that were very lovely (not a huge fan of the gold though, better to be used as an accent for other projects).

I've seen other so-called "metallic" papers that were cheap or was basically just covered in glitter that went everywhere when you tried to do anything with it. These metallics are top-notch and I absolutely love them. I'll probably use every single one of them in one project or another.

But Paper and More doesn't carry just paper, they carry envelopes, vellum paper, they even have recycled card stock and soooo much more. So if your going to be making your own invitations for your wedding, baby shower or anything paper related for that matter, be sure to check out Paper and More before you go anywhere else!
To make things a little easier I will not be offering custom orders anymore, at least for now. Instead, I will be concentrating on other parts of my inventory, such as stationery accessories, greeting cards and ready-to-ship note card sets. Come fall, I will begin offering custom orders again, and will have some new designs for the upcoming seasons.

Right now I'm working on Mother's Day cards, since that's the next holiday coming up, and those who purchase my Mother's Day cards will receive a coupon code for their Father's Day card (Which I also need to get started on). Also, when you buy a Mother's Day card from my shop, you will receive a coupon code for 15% off your Father's Day card purchase.

I'm also trying to sell locally. There's a Facebook page called Porterville Buy and Sell where members of the community post pictures and posts of things they are selling or looking for. The most popular posts are for holidays so I'm hoping to get some extra revenue by putting a few posts on there. If you sell handmade goods, look for community pages on Facebook that are for selling things, I've made a lot of extra cash selling things I no longer wanted or needed, so now I'm going to try my hand at selling my cards.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-8125237947891815562012-04-06T08:00:00.030-07:002012-04-07T21:22:09.611-07:00Friday's Faves: My Favorites ListIf you have an account on Etsy you probably have a favorites list of things you really like but can't buy at the moment. So, today, I'd like to share my future plans with you

Check out these DIY shelf organizers. It looks super easy to do and will work perfectly with my narrow shelves that are above my desk.

I'll be adding my own twist however. I'm entertaining the idea of drawer pulls instead of square holes for my boxes. I'm also considering making lids to help keep the dust out. I'm going to use my new Cricut expression to cut out labels from chipboard and paint them with chalk board paint so I don't have to guess what's in what box.

I really want to reorganize the tools I have hanging on the wall. Some of those items will go into the boxes I'll be making since I don't use them that often. Others will go into that top drawer or another nook in my room.
But what to do with all those little paper scraps? You don't want to throw them away because that's wasteful and you never know when you might need that particular color in that particular size right? Well here's a way to organize them:

Buy one or a few accordion file organizers and organize your scraps by color. I've already started to do this but I still have a LOT more scraps to tuck away that are currently cramped inside an old popcorn tin that I spray painted. I may need one of those hulking file organizers that you see in offices for all my paper scraps.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-954754059122597352012-04-02T08:00:00.002-07:002012-04-02T08:00:12.679-07:00New Monday: Bog Update

You probably noticed last week that my blog was different. It now matches my logo and style much better and I now have a grab button, so if you have been featured on my blog at some point be sure to "grab" it and post it to your website. I'll also be making some changes and updates to the pages.
<div style="color: #9fc5e8; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">My Shop
I'm trying to work on designs since I'm still not well enough to do custom orders and it could be a while. Hopefully I'll have some new and wonderful designs to put up once I'm ready to open the shop back up.
<div style="color: #9fc5e8; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Me
Because of my recent illness (which you can read more about here) wreaking havoc on my most valuable and precious limbs, my hands, I can't do a whole a lot. Taking care of Tessa is doable but challenging, I have to keep my hands covered in the shower, while I'm cooking and other every day activities that we take for granite. So, I've had to drop two of my college courses since writing is difficult and eventually I may not be able to walk for a while. But I'm staying positive and I know this will pass and my hands will be back to being useful in no time.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-38488743189426987662012-03-31T08:00:00.000-07:002012-03-29T09:57:13.843-07:00Saturday Recap

I told you about the horrible disease that attacks the hands, feet and mouth. If you've read up on this illness you'll know that it's a good reminder to wash your hands and your little ones hands often. I live with my mom, so my entire world is crammed into a small 10x12 room, that serves for homework, sleeping, dressing, and of course, my business. I've had to downsize on a lot of my personal things so that my room can function more for my business. I've sold books, put my desktop away that I NEVER use, and I'm still getting rid of things. So, every Thursday (hopefully every Thursday) I'll be sharing pictures and my journey to making the most of my teeny bedroom.

So this is my work area. I've actually already did quite a bit here already before I took the picture. There was just stuff piled on top of my desk; trash, mail, clothes, books, along with my computer monitor, keyboard and lamp, which already took a good amount of space on my desk as it was. Notice the screw driver on my desk? I had just taken down my makeshift "shelves" that had once housed all my embossing powders.

My makeshift shelves

My so-called "shelves" were sock drawer organizers that I never really made use of, so, I turned them sideways and hung them on the walls.

So what happened to all of my embossing powders? Well you see that bottom drawer there? That's where they are now.

I took pieces of cardboard from a box that I have had in my room forever and used them to create dividers in my bottom drawer. In the top left compartment are my embossing powders which I labeled, to the right of that, which you can't really see is my Xyron sticker maker which once sat on the wooden shelf above my desk. Below the sticker maker is my heat tool and to the left of that is glue, tape and what-nots.

Before, this drawer was filled and unorganized with ribbon spools and ribbon scraps. But now, my ribbon spools are hanging nicely, in plain site on a tension rod (stole this idea from the blog Sew Many Ways...) under my book shelf, and my ribbon scraps are in a vase that I found at the Salvation Army.

The middle drawer has office-like necessities (Hello little owl post its! Aren't you just adorable and right where I need you too!) For this drawer I used some mis-matched dishes that I've collected that have been sitting packed away in my "hope chest" (hope-to-move-out-someday-chest). I figured, what's the fun in having them if they're not getting any use?

My ink drawer. At this point I ran out of cardboard but you get the general idea here.

So this is the very top drawer. I have no clue what to use it for just yet, right now it still has some junk in it. It also needs to be repaired before I make any big plans for it. You can't see it but the bottom part of the drawer in the far right corner is trying to detach itself from the sides.

So that's everything for today's Progress in the Craft Room. I doubt I'll have anything new done for next Thursday, so instead I'll be telling you of my future plans.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-25541880465013862052012-03-27T08:00:00.001-07:002012-03-27T08:00:06.769-07:00Paper Tuesday: Dry embossingYou probably know what embossing is, have wanted to try it but just never got around to it. I fell into it by accident. A friend of my mom had a bunch of crafting stuff that she never used and gave it to us to comb through it. One of the things in the tub she gave us was this;

A Fiskars embossing system, great for beginners. You can buy several different templates for it as well. The template sets come with two matching, plastic stencils, you insert your paper in between, line it up with the image your wanting to emboss onto it and then just get busy. It's a lot of fun and very addictive, I use this baby a lot to emboss my stationery sets.

There are also grid lines to help you line your paper up, which comes in really handy when your making multiples and need to move fast. The grids really save time.

It also comes with an embossing stylus, but I recommend buying extras of different point sizes.

I absolutely love mine, and unless there's a bigger and better system out there, I don't think I'll be getting rid of mine anytime soon.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-87562575122146446602012-03-26T08:00:00.001-07:002012-03-26T08:00:11.396-07:00New Monday: Ok, so there's nothing really new here...

I don't have anything new to actually share I just wanted to let you guys know what's been going on with me. Right now school is overwhelming and it seems like every couple of weeks my daughter catches something from day care and then passes it on to me. I have never missed this much school due to illness (faked illness, shopping, laziness... yes... but not actual illness). Well this time, what I thought was another cold lovingly shared by daughter was in fact, not a cold. I have whats called hand-foot-mouth disease. It is a horrible disease that causes sores, a rash and blisters on your, well, hands, feet and mouth. It can also spread to other parts of the body. It is also highly contagious. So, my little one has been sent to San Francisco with her dad so I can recover, and I am doing better, but I'm not quite there yet either.

If you have children under the age of 10, I suggest learning about this disease. It's a childhood disease that no one tells you about, but anyone at any age can get (Heck, I'm living proof). Also, learn how to prevent it also and what signs to look for. I think every parent should know about this, and even though it's not as common as chickenpox or other childhood illnesses, I can't imagine a little one having to go through this, and quite frankly, I am down right <strike>pissed off</strike> angry that there is no vaccine for this.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-5021875783369018092012-03-20T08:00:00.001-07:002012-03-20T08:00:07.469-07:00Paper Tuesday: Stamping tricksStamping can be a bit tricky, especially if your using the traditional stamps instead of the clear acrylic stamps. So, today I will be sharing my own tips from personal experience and tips from around the web.

<div style="color: #ea9999; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Stand while stamping
If your standing up over what you are stamping you will be able to center the image where you want it better than if you were sitting.

<div style="color: #ea9999; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Test out your ink
Take a scrap of the paper you intend to stamp on and test the ink you'll be using. How does the color of ink look against your paper? Does the ink bleed through? Will the ink dry on that paper? I've discovered that some ink's just don't work well with certain papers, so test it out.

<div style="color: #ea9999; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Practice makes perfect
Practice your stamping if your not using acrylic blocks. If your having to center an image on a paper, it helps to make a few tries so that the next time you do it for real and not for practice, you'll be able to eye-ball it perfectly of where it should go. Also remember to apply even pressure, and to lift the stamp straight up.

Practice loading your stamp. Sometimes I get a little over zealous when loading my stamp with ink and instead of a nice clear image I get this blob. And sometimes I don't load my ink enough and the image is incomplete on the page. Figure out how much pressure to use when loading your stamp, after a few times you'll automatically know how much pressure to apply to get the right amount of ink.

Now that I've shared some of my own tips, it's time to take a look from around the web.

Stampin' is great. It has tons of tips for every technique out there. If there is something specific you want to learn about stamping, this would be a great go-to website.
I have been wanting one ever since a family friend had lent us her's. But I didn't get just any Cricut machine, I got the Cricut Expression. No, it's no the Expression 2 though, I didn't need anything that fancy. I haven't gotten it yet, I ordered it through Amazon along with some cartridges, but I cannot wait until I get it, I can just imagine all the new designs I will be able to offer!

Here are some awesome things that people have made from the different Cricut machines that I found on Pinterest:

Have you ever stamped on vellum, you know that clear, plastic-like paper, and the ink just smears? Well here are my tips:

Tip 1:
Don't use too much ink, that will just take longer to dry

Tip 2:
If you have one, or can borrow one, use a heating tool to help the ink set up. Be sure to keep moving the heating tool and not to get it too close to the paper or it will turn it orange-ish

Tip 3:
To check to see if it's dry or not, what I do is hold the stamped image up to the light and tilt it so I can see where it's still wet. If your still not entirely sure, take a tissue and carefully blot your stamped image, this will help to take off the excess ink and help you see if it's dry or not.

Tip 4:
For good measure, I let the image sit for a while and then go back to it to REALLY make sure it's good and dry and won't smudge. If it continues to smudge go back to step 2.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-91376484278956527102012-02-27T08:00:00.001-08:002012-02-27T08:00:12.722-08:00New Monday: Belated Valentine Envelope SealsSo I had planned on listing some heart envelope seals for Valentine's day, but then I came down with the flu. Even though I missed the opportunity for Valentine's day sales I knew I could still list my envelope hearts and they would probably sell through out the year anyway.
So in honor of all the glam, glitz, high fashion, celebrities and parties, today's Friday's Faves goes to everyones favorite little gold man. I'd like to note that I am doing this post well ahead of time, so some of these items may have already sold. Also, Blogger was giving me some problems so there won't be as many listings as usual.
It's a pain isn't it? I bought a bunch of this beautiful, green, heavy card stock to make cards for my shop. But when I tried folding it I had a hard time lining up the edges and when I did fold it, instead of a crisp crease down the center I had all these ugly wrinkles. So it's been sitting up in my closet, unused and untouched for nearly a year.

Then I saw this...

It's a board with rulers on the side and grooves all along the surface. You line your card up with the measurements, then take your "stick" (I don't know what it's called) and run it along on top of the paper into one of the grooves. This will score the paper and make it easier for folding. I want one... If bought brand new it can cost you over $30, but is totally worth it if you do a lot of paper crafts.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-64480271066471688142012-02-20T08:00:00.000-08:002012-02-20T08:00:00.641-08:00New Monday: New Shop BannerI've been updating my shop here lately and if you've been in to visit recently you may have noticed the new banner at the top of the page. I feel that this simpler design suits my shop better than the old banner and brings more focus to the logo. The old banner looked very much like the banner at the top of my blog page, which I will also be changing.

Here is the new banner...
But here, it only feels like Spring for a month, sometimes longer if we're lucky. So, since Spring is just around the corner today's Friday's Faves is dedicated to flowers, flowy dresses, sun hats and beautiful pastels.

Monday: New Monday
Monday's will now be used to discuss all things new; such as new products, changes in the shop or blog and new shops on Etsy

Tuesday: Paper Tuesday
On Tuesday's I hope to bring information on the history revolving around paper, paper crafts, and even printing as well as newly (new to me anyway) discovered paper tools. I'll also try to post some DIY paper crafts of my own or ones I've found online.

Wednesday: Stationer Wednesday
Wednesday will feature a stationery artist from Etsy

Thursday: Coming Soon

Friday: Friday Faves
I'm keeping Friday as Friday Faves because it seems to be everyone's favorite blog day

Saturday: Recap
Saturday will have a summary of what's been going on for the week with links to take you back to the original postsElissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-79964005576521004892012-02-13T11:40:00.000-08:002012-02-13T11:40:33.770-08:00Tuesday: Happy Valentine's Day!I know it's been forever since I've written, but it's been crazy. First I was sick with a cold, then my daughter had it, so I got behind in classes and had to catch up. Then, we were all sick with the stomach flu and I had to play catch up again.

So, for today I'm just going to do a quick announcement, starting next week, I will be trying to blog everyday. Which, I know, sounds crazy since I could barely keep up with my previous schedule of just three times a week. But I have a plan, no really I do...Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505912043222533322.post-52834910454424561852012-01-16T07:00:00.000-08:002012-01-16T07:00:01.930-08:00Open Monday: My new best friend and a coupon codeFirst thing's first, we have a new coupon code today, #96. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a new best friend. I just can't see how I could ever live without him now that he is in my life. He is the best thing that has happened to me (other than my beautiful baby girl of course) and my shop (other than all my wonderful customers of course). He keeps me focused and helps me manage my time, I just love him. What's his name? Hours Tracker! And he's an app for my iPhone! I bet you thought I had a new boyfriend huh? So whats so great about this app you ask? Well I'll tell you...

Being a full time student, full time mom and full time shop owner, staying focused, organized and finding balance can be a challenge but with Hour Tracker I can do all those things a little better and less stressful. I can create "jobs" and clock in whenever I want and use other apps on my phone at the same time without interfering with the tracker. And best of all, if I forget to clock out I can go back and manually enter the time I had stopped working. Which is great for when I have to stop everything and attend to my daughter or help my mom with something around the house.

Before the tracker, I was trying to do everything. I was trying to finish an entire shop task in one day, along with doing homework, chores and taking care of my daughter. But now, I set a certain amount of hours to work in my shop in a day so that I have time to do other things that need to get done and being able to keep track of it has helped immensely!

There are a lot of similar apps out there, some of them are free but don't have has many features as the ones that you can purchase. My app cost me 4.99 and was worth every penny.Elissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429686372361632472noreply@blogger.com1
