Paper Tuesday: Stamping on Vellum

Well I forgot to blog for Tuesday and since I don't have a post for Wednesday, we'll just pretend today is Tuesday!

Have you ever stamped on vellum, you know that clear, plastic-like paper, and the ink just smears? Well here are my tips:

Tip 1:
Don't use too much ink, that will just take longer to dry

Tip 2:
If you have one, or can borrow one, use a heating tool to help the ink set up. Be sure to keep moving the heating tool and not to get it too close to the paper or it will turn it orange-ish

Tip 3:
To check to see if it's dry or not, what I do is hold the stamped image up to the light and tilt it so I can see where it's still wet. If your still not entirely sure, take a tissue and carefully blot your stamped image, this will help to take off the excess ink and help you see if it's dry or not.

Tip 4:
For good measure, I let the image sit for a while and then go back to it to REALLY make sure it's good and dry and won't smudge. If it continues to smudge go back to step 2.

So I had planned on listing some heart envelope seals for Valentine's day, but then I came down with the flu. Even though I missed the opportunity for Valentine's day sales I knew I could still list my envelope hearts and they would probably sell through out the year anyway.

I had given a sheet of these little cuties to a customer as a way of saying thank you for her patience since I had taken longer than normal to do her order, and had asked her what she thought of them.

Paper Tuesday: Heavy Cardstock

Have you ever tried folding heavy card stock by hand? It's a pain isn't it? I bought a bunch of this beautiful, green, heavy card stock to make cards for my shop. But when I tried folding it I had a hard time lining up the edges and when I did fold it, instead of a crisp crease down the center I had all these ugly wrinkles. So it's been sitting up in my closet, unused and untouched for nearly a year.

Then I saw this...

It's a board with rulers on the side and grooves all along the surface. You line your card up with the measurements, then take your "stick" (I don't know what it's called) and run it along on top of the paper into one of the grooves. This will score the paper and make it easier for folding. I want one... If bought brand new it can cost you over $30, but is totally worth it if you do a lot of paper crafts.

I know it's been forever since I've written, but it's been crazy. First I was sick with a cold, then my daughter had it, so I got behind in classes and had to catch up. Then, we were all sick with the stomach flu and I had to play catch up again.

So, for today I'm just going to do a quick announcement, starting next week, I will be trying to blog everyday. Which, I know, sounds crazy since I could barely keep up with my previous schedule of just three times a week. But I have a plan, no really I do...

I have a new best friend. I just can't see how I could ever live without him now that he is in my life. He is the best thing that has happened to me (other than my beautiful baby girl of course) and my shop (other than all my wonderful customers of course). He keeps me focused and helps me manage my time, I just love him. What's his name? Hours Tracker! And he's an app for my iPhone! I bet you thought I had a new boyfriend huh? So whats so great about this app you ask? Well I'll tell you...

Being a full time student, full time mom and full time shop owner, staying focused, organized and finding balance can be a challenge but with Hour Tracker I can do all those things a little better and less stressful. I can create "jobs" and clock in whenever I want and use other apps on my phone at the same time without interfering with the tracker. And best of all, if I forget to clock out I can go back and manually enter the time I had stopped working. Which is great for when I have to stop everything and attend to my daughter or help my mom with something around the house.

Before the tracker, I was trying to do everything. I was trying to finish an entire shop task in one day, along with doing homework, chores and taking care of my daughter. But now, I set a certain amount of hours to work in my shop in a day so that I have time to do other things that need to get done and being able to keep track of it has helped immensely!

There are a lot of similar apps out there, some of them are free but don't have has many features as the ones that you can purchase. My app cost me 4.99 and was worth every penny.

New Wednesday: What's new pussycat?

Whoooa whoooa whoooa whoa whoa... Sorry.

Enough with the song and dance. I'm here to introduce my newest monogram creation that would be perfect for a newly wed couple, a friend, an anniversary gift or if you just want indulge yourself a little while you look all fancy schmancy with your silver, monogrammed and herringbone patterned stationery.

The herringbone pattern is from a stamp that I carved myself and I think it came out beautiful. The bow was (which is teeny tiny and just as cute as can be) was tied by hand and the square that the monogram is on was also cut by hand (I did not use any punches). I rounded the corners which I think makes it look more "finished." I plan on creating a thank you card that will match this one, just trying to decide how to execute it.

Thank you everyone who left warm wishes for my Sophie and I. I'm writing this Saturday morning and still no sign of her yet, but who knows, perhaps she'll be home by the time you have read this. I've done everything I could for her, I put her bed outside in hopes the smell would bring her home, I put up posters, I went to the different animal shelters, called around to all the vets and even put an ad in the paper. I've done everything short of assembling a search party. At best, I hope someone found her and has given her a good home.

Well, the weather here has been a bit gloomy but should be brightening up. And it's due to that gloomyness that I was unable to take photos of my latest ready-to-ship stationery set. Which makes me sad because they are incredibly cute.

Here's a brief description since I can't show them to you yet:
It consists of 5 A2 cards, they are blue and white. There's some paper lace and pretty ribbons involved. They are possibly my favorite ready-to-ship set yet. By the way, hot glue may be awesome, but it sure is stringy. I think I spent a good chunk of my time getting rid of glue strings while making these cute little beauties.

Open Monday: Re-purpose a Christmas Card

WHAT!? A box made from a Christmas card?

That's just madness!

Do you have piles of Christmas cards from last year that you don't know what to do with? Or maybe you have some left over cards from one of those cute boxed sets from Target? Re-purpose it!

Every Christmas, if I'm in need of a small box for wrapping a gift, I hunt down an old Christmas card and turn it into a box! (My 7th grade science teacher taught me this trick, and I'm still using it)

Here's what you need:

A cute card

Pencil

Ruler

Tape (I could only find packaging tape, but scotch works too)

Scissors


My cute card and supplies

Step 1: (Ignore the fact that this is vertical, Blogger's fault) Take your card and cut it straight down the fold line. This will give you your lid (The front of the card) and the bottom part of the box (the back of the card)

Step 2: Take your ruler and lay it diagonal from corner to corner and draw a line. Repeat to create an X in the middle. Be sure to do this for both parts of the card.

Step 3: For the bottom part of your box, take one edge and bring it in to the dead center of the X. Repeat for all sides. I use a ruler to really press the edges, makes them nice and crisp.

Step 4: This step is very similar to step 3. To create your lid, your going to fold in your edges again BUT DO NOT BRING THEM TO DEAD CENTER OF X! Got it? Okay. Instead, bring the edges in just a little shy of the center, this will make this half of the box slightly larger so that it will fit over the bottom half. Repeat on all sides. You should have two halves of a card that look like this:

Step 5: Now you need to make flaps so you can fold your box into place. To do that, cut along the fold of the short squares until you come to the intersection of the other fold lines. Since this is a little trickier to explain, you can refer to the photo below. Repeat this step for the other half.

Step 6: Bring your flaps inward and tape them together to create the sides. You will have a loose, random flap that you will bring upward to the two flaps you just taped. Like this one up here. You will then fold that excess over your two taped flaps. This is what it should look like:

You can also tape this down to make it look neater, although it is not necessary. Repeat step 6 for the other half of your box. Once all your sides are up, folded and taped, put your lid on and voila! Your cute little box that needs no wrapping!

Now, I have the perfect little box for niece's Christmas present!

I hope you enjoyed today's tutorial and I'm sure you'll be finding excuses to make more of these little guys, they are a lot of fun.

Open Monday: Last Minute Costumes from Pinterest

Halloween is only a week away and some of you may still be racking your brain for quick, easy, last minute Halloween costumes, be it for yourself or someone of your family. Well Pinterest is here to save the day!

This one can be done without sewing. Cut out the camera shape and straps from a fabric and use an iron-on adhesive found in the sewing section. Perhaps you could even use ric-rac for the straps.

I'm actually doing this one for Tessa's costume. I found a psychedelic fabric at walmart and package of iron on peace signs and gold ric-ric for the "chain" for the necklace and headband. Just use an iron-on adhesive for the vest pieces, which I created patterns for with wax paper (it was see through so I could see what I was doing).

He's a leaf blower! Get it?


You or your child can dress as the weather man/woman! All you need is an umbrella, raincoat and boots. For the lightening and rain drops, just cut out some cardboard and cove in glitter.

This semester at the community college, I've been taking Intro to Entrepreneurship. And I LOVE IT! If running a business is something your interested in, I highly suggest taking some courses.

How to get a business license
The different types of businesses (retail, manufacturer, wholesale)

The best part of my class (and I'm sure it varies from school to school) is the open discussions we have. My professor really encourages questions and ideas. It is by far, my favorite class so far.

I know! I know! I am SUCH a terrible blogger, I didn't blog for an entire week! But can you blame me? I mean, I'm a full time student and full time Mom to an adorable 11 month old baby girl (I can't believe she will be one year in just a month).

First time I was pooped/peed on
When I was going to bed at 8pm
When I used my own spit to clean my babies face. I hated myself for that one...

Open Monday: I Left My Heart in San Francisco

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend my brother, me and my sweet baby girl Tessa drove up to San Francisco so she could stay with her daddy for the week.

The drive up was surprisingly nice and the way down there was more traffic but it was fine. So, late Saturday we arrived to Tim's, very nice, one bedroom apartment (after walking down a very steep hill to get to the apartment). Then we went to his friends house for dinner. They made us artichoke pie, which was surprisingly good; a tasty salad, and homemade macaroni and cheese that I could have just kept eating, it was so good. Until this weekend I had yet to have homemade mac 'n cheese that was actually edible. Sadly, Tessa did not get to enjoy the good food as she had already had her dinner but she was quick to make friends with their sweet dog, Ugo. I haven't seen Tessa laugh that hard in a while. She immediately stole the hearts of Marc and Carlos, our gracious hosts.

After dinner and dessert, we shook hands and hugged, and praised the food. It was well past Tessa's bedtime and the 5 hour drive had exhausted her, but we succeeded in keeping her awake just a little longer until we got home, otherwise she would have napped in the car and gone to bed even later.

The next morning, after Tessa had been awake for a bit it was time for her nap. I rocked her to sleep as I knew I wouldn't get to do it the rest of the week. Tim placed her in the crib for me and as I stood there watching him place her for her nap, I could feel the tears coming. But I didn't cry long.

Sometime after Tessa woke from her nap, my brother and I packed our things into the car as Tim and Tessa stood at the curb waving goodbye.

I had just left my ten month old heart in San Francisco.

Has anyone here ever had to share custody? What was your experience? How did you handle it?

As to my experience in San Francisco, which was very brief, I enjoyed it very much. I couldn't get over all the beautiful Victorian homes and the weather was a wonderful change from the recent humidity here where I live.

Wednesday Special: Operation Write Home

I'm sure some of you may have heard about Operation Write Home. I just heard about it yesterday and fell in love with the idea. I will be donating 50% of all proceeds from the month of September in honor of the troops fighting for those who lost their lives from the tragic terrorist attack.

Operation Write Home is an organization dedicated to helping our soldiers. They collect handmade cards and send them to the troops to help them remember that we are thinking of them, too.

So far, I am able to donate up to $19.40.

I think I would like Econ better if Jack Black were teaching.

Last week was the first week back to school and it went really well, the only class I'm not super duper excited about is probably my Econ class. The class I am most excited about is Intro to Entrepreneurship, we haven't done a whole lot in there yet but I already like my teacher, she's a shoe person, too!

Speaking of shoes, you know what sucks? That I can't wear really cute shoes for the next couple of weeks but the really cute shoes I wore last week put really bad sores on my heels so now I'm stuck wearing tennis shoes and flip flops... Lameness. I am so getting rid of those shoes.

But anyway, hopefully this week will go as smoothly and as easily as last week (and hopefully not too much econ homework).

New Wednesday: Almost, not quite

Past few days I've been working on bringing some new items to the shop. First off, I'll be offering stationery supplies, envelopes, paper, embellishments and so forth. Second, my design for jotters (aka small notebook) has been tweaked and if all is well I may have a couple listed by the end of the month.

Open Monday: Photo Madness

Once again, I have quite a few photos to share with you today, some of them are from my beach trip and the others are of a very simple, easy creation of mine.

Look! One of them is purple! PURPLE!!

This is a little blurry, I know. I took this under the Avila pier, where you can walk down some stairs down to the water underneath. There were plenty more star fish on the other pillars. I had never seen a live star fish before; personally I think they look like strange creatures from another world that crash landed on Earth and are now living in our oceans. Sounds like a science fiction novel, doesn't it?

Sea biscuits? Where's the butter?

I'm very proud of this photo. This was taken in a souvenir shop in Avila beach; it's a close up of a bucket filled with sea biscuits. I thought the soft lighting and texture of these little guys were beautiful.

My Chalkboard

So here is my simple creation I mentioned at the beginning of this post. I'd been wanting a chalkboard, something I can put goals on that will be visible every time I walk into the room to keep me motivated and inspired. Ideally, I wanted to paint one of my sliding closet doors in chalkboard paint but I wasn't sure how my landlord would have taken to that, so, I improvised. I had taken an art class and one of the required tools for the class was an artist's board just like this one:

I covered the parts I didn't want painted with blue painter's tape and then covered it with two coats of chalkboard paint. On the back and on the wall, I attached the command strips that are for picture hanging, so that I didn't have to do any drilling into my chalkboard or wall (lord knows there's enough holes in my walls)


These work great

And voila! My chalk board. I love it, and since I already had the paint and the artist board it didn't cost me anything extra to make. It's perfect for brain storming, keeping to do lists and ideas on it. I also love the clippies because I use them to hold the rag I use to erase with and my design sketches. Some day though, when I have an entire room to use as a studio, I want to paint an entire wall in chalk board paint with magnetic paint underneath, so I can brainstorm to my hearts content.

My dinosaur of a laptop

Not really. I've just been busy is all. Yesterday, I spent most of the day doing dishes (there weren't that many it just takes forever when you have a little one screaming for you every 5 minutes) and backing up files from my laptop before it's new hard drive gets installed <-------So excited! It's the equivalent of getting a new laptop only for about $50 and will hopefully last another four years, hopefully by the time it goes kaput for good I can get a new laptop, like a Mac net book or something as equally awesome.

I am working on bringing some new products other than stationery. I've found a way to make some small jotters but the design still needs some tweaking. I'm also thinking about bookmarks and tote bags that will be based on my stationery.

My weekend and some news

I had a great time at the beach this weekend. We pigged out on junk food, played board games and I almost set the house on fire. I bought Tessa a stuffed toy whale that I named Wendy, I collected some drift wood and found a whole sand dollar (if you've ever been to the beach you will know that it is nearly impossible to find an entire sand dollar). We went to the Avila pier and walked down the stairs to the water where we saw dozens of star fish clinging to the poles that were holding up the pier. It was a great vacation and just what I needed, I think.

Next week, starting August 22nd I will be starting school back up. So, my top priorities will be school, Tessa, and my shop which means I will be blogging less. I'll still blog on Monday's, Wednesday's I'll be blogging about the shop and updates and Friday will stay Friday's Faves. If I need to blog more and have the time to do it I will, but this semester will be hectic ad stressful as is and I feel that I need to downsize some.

To the Beach We Go

Good morning friends. Sorry I didn't post yesterday but I spent the day packing because today I will be leaving for the beach! Yay me! I'm so excited, and nervous. This will be the first time I will be away from my baby and the first time she will be spending the night at her dad's. I'm nervous how they'll fare at bedtime but I know she'll be safe.

I'll be taking my laptop so I'll still be open for business and hopefully I'll have a chance to keep you guys updated.

Baby shower thank you cards

Last week, I added two new thank you cards, specifically for baby showers.

I used a white card stock, that was cut and folded by hand. In the center, I stamped an image of a Victorian baby carriage with two designs surrounding it, which I think helps to create the focus on the center of the card. In each corner, I stamped a simpler design and then embossed circles around the edge, creating a border to complete the card.

On the inside at the bottom right hand corner, I stamped "Thank you."

I made the cards available in a light pink and blue. If you aren't sure about the cards, you can always purchase a sample card here.

I'd like to make note of the little bunny in the photos. I had bought that bunny from cindimh of Etsy for my daughter's first Easter. It's so cute, and just the right size for her tiny hands and perfect as a prop for these small cards. Thanks cindimh for giving me permission to use your bunny in my photos!

A fun, eco-friendly way, to sell your goods

How are you selling your goods? In your very own store? Out of your home? Online? Consignment? However your doing it, I have found a new way for you to sell your goods; but instead of trying to bring the people to you, why not go to the people?

I was reading one of my favorite blogs yesterday when I came across this article . This artisan takes her creations around Santa Cruz on her bike. She uses a child carrier as her "store." I thought it was rather genius of her.

What do you think? I think this is something that could only work for certain creations and in certain areas. For example, I don't think I could do something like this with the type of wares I sell and the area I live in. Stationery is a bit of a dieing breed as email and social networking has become the preferred method of communication, which is why I mostly sell thank you sets and wedding stationery, something that someone has to have a need for before purchasing. But feather extensions in Santa Cruze? On a bike? A perfect combination. I've never been to Santa Cruz but many coastal cities encourages bicycling and artisans. As for the feather extensions, it's a growing obsession among young girls all the way to women in their thirties. It's not the type of ware that you need someone to be in the market for specifically, it's an accessory. Generally, if women find something pretty, they like it, and they can afford it (and sometimes can't afford it), then they'll buy it. How many times have you gone to the store just to buy some mundane need, and then you see something cute in the clothes section and you end up buying a new outfit that you had no original intention of buying? I've done it lots.

If your considering doing this then you need to ask yourself some questions...

1. What are you selling?

2. What are the people like in the area you are considering selling?

3. Do you think you have the type of ware that could be sold from a bike?

4. Are the people in your area likely to buy your ware from a bike?

I have so much to tell you! Like... Lots... So, please, no dozing here.

This weekend my Mom decided to take a "mini" vacation to my brother's so he can treat her to fine dining and antiquing. So, I decided to take this opportunity to take time for myself by hitting a few of my favorite stores and here is what I came home with. Well, some of it anyway, some of it I already ate and some of it is better appreciated if worn.

I just love Hobby Lobby, my heart once did belong to Michael's but then Hobby Lobby arrived and my breath was just taken away... I'm sorry Michael's but Hobby Lobby just has so much more to offer! Can't wait to show you the finished pages of Tessa's scrapbook, adorned with these little beauties

I love this sweater so much. I also bought a pair of fabulous skinny jeans that make ME look skinny. The sweater was originally $48 and the skinny jeans were $38. But because J.C. Penney was having sale, guess how much I paid for them both? $37! That's less than the pair of jeans alone! I am very proud of myself and can't wait for the weather to turn cold.

And since I mentioned scrapbooking earlier...

This is the first page of Tessa's book. The photo was taken by me when she was two weeks old. I also put her "name tag" on here as well. The paper and all the embellishments were given to me by a friend of my Mom's who had bought a BOAT LOAD of craft stuff from a yardsale; from embroidery, to leather working to scrapbooking stuff. I'm really happy with how it came out. Can't wait to work on the other pages!

We don' need no education... Oh, sorry. I was thinking about today's post being about the up and coming new school year and I carried away. If you know what song that's from then you rock and that's all there is to it.

So, I was surfing Pinterest, (which I believe I had confessed my love about yesterday) and I saw this very simple pin, all it said was, "Naked Binder." Hmmm? I clicked.

Well, you guessed it, it was a binder. A very simple, plain, naked binder. So what's so special about it? It's made from recycled materials and lasts longer than those vinyl binders, and better looking if you ask me. They are available with different different spines, round and square, and in different sizes, all they way up to a 2.5 D ring. I might just be ordering these when I go back to school. I <3 Pinterest, no, wait, I adore Pinterest! If Pinterest were a man I would serenade him and then have his babies. Well, maybe that's going a bit far, but you get the idea. At least once a day, usually at night once the little one is down for the evening I go on Pinterest and browse my favorite categories and then I pin, I pin like crazy. I have a couple of new sets to introduce to you today. Meet, "Recycled Love." (I should start a band with that name).

Recyled Love, at the moment is available in two colors; blue and pink and each color has two sets, one is a ten-card set for $11.80 and the other is a five-card set for $6.00.

They are name Recycled Love for their eco friendliness. The main paper is a recycled kraft card stock and the paper lace was handmade by me from scraps from a previous project. I embossed each heart individually on the kraft card stock and then I stamped "LOVE" on the paper lace which I then attached to the card stock. The inside is blank.

Before I rebooted my shop, I had made these cards for individual sale, but when I reopened my shop I decided to try them as sets and I think they came out adorably.

Some Things I Wish Some Etsy Shop Owners Would Do

I did some surfing on Etsy last week (Making a wish list of some things I would love to have when I go back to school) and I hit some bumps. I'd find an item I liked it but it was lacking some information...

Tee's (Or clothing in General)

I found a shop with some cute graphic tee's. They had the different sizes listed but there was one problem, there were no measurement's listed for each shirt. In some shops, I'm a medium, in others I'm a large or extra large and sometimes even a XXL (Those shops that put me at XXL can just eat it). I had no way of telling what size I was.

So please, list the measurements, you'll get more buyers that way.

Bags

I saw some really cute bags. But I would never even consider buying them. Why? Because there were no photos of the inside! For a school bag, I would like something with lots of pockets for pencils, my cell phone and note books. You can also tell a lot about the quality of the bag from the lining, but I guess we'll never, will we?

Please, take a picture of the inside.

In General

This goes for any item, jewelry, clothing, bags, even my stationery! Take pictures of your items next to something so we can get a visual of the size of your item with out having to dig through the drawer for a ruler and then having to imagine what it would look like at that size. If someone wants it bad enough they'll do these steps, or, they'll just keep looking. Who wants to chance a sale?

Tell us your name, the name of your shop and what it is that you do here on Etsy.

My name is Ivy and my shop is Ivy and Otis (www.etsy.com/shop/IvyandOtis.)
I sell mostly Wee Caps, reversible child-sized cycling caps. I have some adult sizes too. I also sometimes post the odd teeshirt, accessory, or toy and I am just now perfecting a design for a Wee Bonnet, reversible cycling bonnet. All of my products are boutique quality and either entirely upcycled or sustainable produced. I have a commitment to reducing waste, reusing things and buying organic.

What is your family life like? (i.e. how many children, their ages, names, are you a single mom? Are they supportive of what they do and so forth?)

I am a single mother. My son is Otis and he just turned two. I like to call this age 'the terrific twos' as opposed to 'terrible' because I think its important to keep a positive outlook. Most of my designs have stemmed from some kind of parenting-related need. I designed the Wee Cap because I wanted to get Otis out on the bike right away but couldn't find anyone selling baby sized bike hats and most other baby hats don't fit under a helmet. In reality, Otis is the inspiration for everything that I do.

Do you have another job outside of Etsy and outside of the home?

I work now and again as a rigger for a theatrical union. It is a tough job and has weird hours so it is hard to find childcare and I can get burnt out really easily. I make things for Etsy in my spare time so I can hopefully one day do that job less and less. I may also go in to a teacher training program because the more time I spend with Otis, the more I realize how fun it is to teach children about the world.

How do you balance home life, Etsy and work?

Sometimes I don't do a very good job balancing things. I just graduated from college which was certainly a balancing act as Otis was born during my junior year. It can get really tough at times but I just try to always do my best. In fact, that is one of my mottos for parents to keep them optimistic about parenting, "Just do the best you can."

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?

I love the whole idea of Etsy. I love artists and creative people. Also, I saw that what I was making wasn't being made by many other people and thought maybe there would be a market for it. I do sell some of my stuff at retail stores, but having to pay the 50% commission makes that ar less lucrative.

Do you feel pretty successful in your Etsy shop or is there room to grow? If you feel successful is there a secret you'd like to share with us?

My shop is just getting started. I opened it a while back but didn't start posting things until this month. So far I have had just 4 sales, but I was featured in the Esty finds newsletter and a local store in my area called Oaklandish found my shop and asked for a consignment deal so I am feeling optimistic. As for feeling successful, whether I am getting sales or not, I feel successful as long as I still love what I'm making. When I finish making a new style or come up with a new design and take a step back and say, "yeah, that's awesome," then I feel successful. Taking pride in your work is really the secret to success.

What do you feel makes your shop special and unique?

I put a lot of love into my work. For me, it's not just about selling things and making money. I really want to promote a way of life where people think about the choices they make on a daily basis. I want to encourage parents not to be afraid to ride their bike with their kids, and I want to promote environmental consciousness, which is why all of my products are either upcycled, repurposed or orgainc/ sustainably produced. There is a lot of extra work that goes in to sourcing these materials and because of the limitations of this process, the end results are usually one-of-a-kind.

As Mom's, things get chaotic and find it hard to stay focused, how do you stay focused and motivated?

When things get crazy, I put my focus back to Otis. He is like a mirror of my energy field. In his behavior I can see exactly what kind of energy I'm putting out and then make adjustments. If he is going crazy and tearing the house apart, I know that I need to relax and give the computer or my sewing machine a break and go for a walk on the beach.

Is there anything else you'd like the readers to know?

As I said, I am just getting started on Etsy, so I can use all of the help I can get promoting my store. I really believe in the quality of what Im making. I just think people need to see it. All Work, No Play

Well, sort of. I've actually been playing quite a bit lately since my niece and nephews have been visiting us for the past week and will be here all of next week; but my mind is always on my work, either telling me to stop goofing off and start creating or desperately trying to come up with new ideas as I sit and play Scrabble. Hmm... Maybe I'll make a Scrabble stationery set? Nah, not my style.

But I was able to take more photos and list two new items this week; one is a ready-to-ship set and the other is an old design in a new color.

My name is Lauren and I am the shop owner of crocheting4baby {aka Tutus & Tea Parties}

What is your family life like? (i.e. how many children, their ages, names, are you a single mom? Are they supportive of what they do and so forth?)
I have been married just over 2 years and we have a beautiful little girl who is turning 2 this summer! My husband also has two children who are great big brothers. They are 6 & 8 and the three of them together are so much fun! We see the boys on weekends.

Do you have another job outside of Etsy and outside of the home?
I am lucky enough to be with my daughter all day, every day! We go to library classes, parks and get to do fun things all day long!

How do you balance home life, Etsy and work?
Since my daughter is almost 2, I am not able to do much for my shop unless she is sleeping. Nap time and bed time are the times I get to create.

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?
To be honest, money was pretty tight when my daughter arrived. I found out about Etsy through my cousin who has a shop & loved the idea of sharing my creations! It is something I enjoy so much!

Do you feel pretty successful in your Etsy shop or is there room to grow? If you feel successful is there a secret you'd like to share with us?
I feel that there is always room to grow. I still feel pretty new to Etsy and after a year am still finding things out. The one thing I started doing that I feel has helped is getting my items professionally photographed on babies/toddlers. I am waiting on pictures of a bunch of new hat designs I just sent out to have photos taken of.

What do you feel makes your shop special and unique?
There are items in my shop that are pretty popular on Etsy but I like to think I have great customer service. I always reply to convos within a day and keep customers updated on their custom request status since most things in my shop are made to order.

As Mom's, things get chaotic and find it hard to stay focused, how do you stay focused and motivated?
My love for creating keeps me motivated. I am always excited to grab a hook & yarn or a top and some paint and get to work. It may sound weird, but when I get to bed, after I say my prayers, I think about what I will create the following day.

Is there anything else you'd like the readers to know?

Still Plugging Away

Last week, I mentioned how badly I wanted to call it quits on my shop; but, I got it organized and created the codes I needed and am making a headway on photographs. Here is what I have so far. I stopped using the tabletop photo kit, I just wasn't happy with the way they were coming out and ended up using our dining room table and window light instead. I'm very happy with how they came out.

I just thought I'd share this with you.

A few days ago I bought a three pack of pretty composition notebooks that I am customizing into day planners. Each one has a quote and the one I am using right now says, "Think of the world you carry within you." - Rainer Maria Rilke.

Think of the world you carry within you. What does this mean to you? It's definitely meant to be inspirational, no doubt about it there. Is Rilke asking us to remember that we have great potential inside of us? Is she talking about our hopes, dreams, secret desires that we keep protected deep inside us? Or is she referring to the people we love that we carry within our hearts. The cliche, "You are my whole world" comes to mind. What does it mean it to you?

I chose to use this notebook specifically for that quote. It inspires me. It reminds me, that, inside of me I have great potential, greater than anyone else could possibly know and with that potential I can reach all my hopes, dreams and deepest desires that I have had tucked away for so long in my heart. In the world I carry within me, I am a successful business owner, I am able to own my own home, I am to provide a safe, beautiful and loving home for my daughter, I am able to help my Mom financially, and in the world I carry within me, I am a strong woman who can do anything.

Mabel Iriberri, Nickel Design, I create personalized invitations for life's celebrations.

What is your family life like? (i.e. how many children, their ages, names, are you a single mom? Are they supportive of what they do and so forth?)
I've got 2 boys, affectionately called Thing 1 and Thing 2. When they are behaving, their names are Nicky (4 years old) and Daniel (2 years old). They are the reason I work as hard as I do. Not only do I want to be able to afford to send them to college, but I'd love to be able to afford all of the little things that will make them into well-rounded young men. Everything from music lessons to art classes to ice hockey (I have to include hockey or my husband will have a fit : )

Do you have another job outside of Etsy and outside of the home?
Outside of Etsy, I work from home as a freelance print graphic designer.

How do you balance home life, Etsy and work?
I'm very fortunate to be able to work from home. Working from home allows me to have an open schedule. While it's not exactly a glamorous fact that I have the freedom to book their dentist appointment any time of the day that I so desire, I do get a kick out of taking them to the park in the middle of the day. That being said, there are many nights that I'm up until midnight finishing work that should have been done earlier in the day. But every moment is worth it for my boys.
I'm also fortunate enough to have a great husband who comes home after work and kidnaps them from time to time to allow me to finish working without minimal bloodshed.

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?
I love Etsy. Etsy has allowed me to show my invitations to a wide audience. I get such a kick out of talking to my customers and hearing all of their party details. Etsy allows me to live vicariously - attending one party after another - I just wish I could get some cake out of this.

Do you feel pretty successful in your Etsy shop or is there room to grow? If you feel successful is there a secret you'd like to share with us?
Successful - not yet. But I'm working on it! There is definitely room to grow. I love it when someone asks me to design something custom for them. I'm not always in touch with what is popular so it's nice to hear new ideas for parties.

What do you feel makes your shop special and unique?
My shop is unique because I offer a product that you can't buy in a store. My invitations not only welcome someone to a party, but they offer a sneak preview of the celebration and encourage someone to attend.

As Mom's, things get chaotic and find it hard to stay focused, how do you stay focused and motivated?
I stay focused because I have a client that needs something by a certain date. Deadlines are key motivators for me : ) Also, I have to be able to afford to keep the house fully stocked with pull-ups, the consequences of running out are big motivators.

Overwhelmed

My shop is back up and running with a couple new designs and banner as well. I still need to rephotograph everything and I would like to reedit some of the photos I've already taken and possibly retake some of them even. But along with that I want to organize my shop; make sure everything is categorized, create item codes for everything, record those codes. There's just so much of it I'll never get it all done before I get back to school. Some days I just want to throw in the towel and say, "Forget it."

I will be canning Healthy Monday and instead will be leaving it for "Open Discussion." I don't really feel like Healthy Monday had fit this blog and I had started it as a way to give myself someone to be accountable to in losing weight (still haven't lost anything and now it's 4th of July and will be spending the evening pigging out). So, instead of having this day reserved for something specific, I'm going to use this day to talk about whatever, things in the news, DIY, my life, Tessa, whatever! I think it will be a good way to start out the week.

In honor of the first ever, "Open Discussion" post; HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

What will you be doing tonight my ~~minions~~ followers? Every year my church has a get together. We grill hot dogs and everyone buys fire works to donate to the church where one brave gentleman sets them off in the parking lot as the rest of us "oooh, aaaaww" over them. This year, instead of hot dogs we'll be doing deserts, mostly ice cream (there goes my waistline) and since I have a little one this year I won't be staying to watch the light show. Knowing Tessa, the noise will scare her and I doubt all that smoke is good for her.
